North Carolina Institute of Appalachian Futurology

Pioneering research into the future of Appalachian communities, technology, ecology, and culture since 2026

About NCIAF

Founded in 2026, the North Carolina Institute of Appalachian Futurology is dedicated to envisioning and shaping a sustainable, prosperous future for the Appalachian region through interdisciplinary research and community engagement.

Envisioning Appalachia's Future

The Appalachian region stands at a critical juncture in 2026, facing both unprecedented challenges and extraordinary opportunities. Climate change, technological disruption, economic transformation, and demographic shifts are reshaping the landscape of our communities.

At NCIAF, we employ advanced foresight methodologies, data analytics, and participatory futures techniques to map possible, probable, and preferable futures for Appalachia. Our work spans multiple domains including sustainable development, cultural preservation, technological innovation, and ecological resilience.

We collaborate with local communities, academic institutions, policymakers, and industry leaders to develop actionable strategies that honor Appalachian heritage while embracing innovation.

Our 2030 Vision

By 2030, we envision an Appalachian region that has become a global model for sustainable mountain community development, where traditional knowledge and cutting-edge innovation coexist to create thriving, resilient communities.
